Allerton is a small city located in Wayne County, Iowa. In 2020, about 430 people lived there. It's a quiet place with a history tied to railroads and local rivalries.
Geography
Allerton covers an area of about 1.14 square miles (3.08 square kilometers). All of this area is land. There are no large bodies of water within the city limits.
Just a few miles west of Allerton, you can find the Allerton reservoir and Bob White State Park. These are great spots for outdoor activities.
Transportation
Allerton used to be an important stop for trains on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. This was a "division point," meaning it was a place where train crews might change or trains might be sorted. However, the railroad went out of business in 1980.
Part of the old train line, called the Golden State Route, was abandoned. It used to go east from Allerton towards Chicago. Today, the remaining train line is known as Union Pacific's Spine Line. It's a busy route connecting Kansas City and Minneapolis.
Even though the big passenger trains stopped coming through Allerton in 1970, the city still has good roads. There's a network of paved "farm to market roads" that connect Allerton to nearby towns. These roads help farmers get their products to markets.
History
Allerton was first planned out by the Rock Island Railroad in 1870 when the train tracks were built through the area. It officially became a town in 1874. At its busiest in 1913, Allerton had about 1,600 people living there.
For a while, Allerton and a nearby town called Corydon were rivals. They both wanted to be the main town, or "county seat," for Wayne County. County records were even moved back and forth between the two towns sometimes! In the end, Corydon became the county seat.
More recently, in March 2022, a strong tornado caused damage to the southeastern part of Allerton.
