What Makes Alluitz Special?
Alluitz is the second tallest mountain in the Urkiola mountain range. It is made of the same strong, gray limestone rock as the nearby Anboto mountain.
One of the most amazing parts of Alluitz is its south side. This side has a huge cliff that is about 600 meters (almost 2,000 feet) high! The north side is also very steep. However, it offers a way up for climbers who have a lot of experience.
If you want to reach the top by walking along the mountain ridges from Anboto, you will need to cross a spot called the "Devil's Pass". This part is known for being very challenging.
Climbing Alluitz Mountain
There are a few ways to climb Alluitz. Some paths are easier, while others are only for experienced climbers.
Starting from Atxarte
This is the most common way to start your climb. It begins in a place called Atxarte, which is 290 meters high. From there, you climb up to a mountain pass called Artola, at 564 meters.
- From Artola, you can choose to climb the easy and nearby Aitz Txiki mountain (791m) to your right.
- To the left of the pass, the climb to Alluitz begins. This path goes along the edge of the big cliff. The whole trip usually takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
The Crest and Devil's Pass
This route starts at the Urkiolamendi pass. It goes from the Larrano pass (957m), which is between Alluitz and Anboto. This path follows a challenging mountain ridge. You need to be very careful on this route.
- The Devil's Pass, also known as Infernuko Zubia, can be crossed safely.
- However, it can feel a bit scary because of the very high cliffs on both sides. This route usually takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes.
The Southern Cliff
The southern cliff of Alluitz looks almost impossible to climb. But this area is actually home to some of the most important rock climbing schools in Biscay. It is a popular spot for serious rock climbers to practice their skills.
