Aitz Txiki is a mountain peak found in Biscay, part of the Basque Country in Spain. It stands 791 meters (about 2,595 feet) high. Its name comes from the Basque words "aitz" (meaning "rock") and "txiki" (meaning "small"). So, Aitz Txiki means "small rock."
About Aitz Txiki
Aitz Txiki is the smallest peak in the Urkiola mountain range. It is part of the same large limestone rock formation that includes the famous mountains of Anboto and Alluitz.
Even though it is the smallest, Aitz Txiki looks very rugged and wild. This is especially true when you see it from the Atxarte pass. This pass separates Aitz Txiki from its neighbor, Untxillaitz.
The mountain has two main tops. The higher one is called Aitz Txiki itself. The lower one is known as Artxua or Sorginkobetagana. Climbing Aitz Txiki can be tough from most sides. However, the side facing Atxarte is the easiest way to reach the top.
You can also find the remains of an old castle on Aitz Txiki. This castle was likely used a long time ago to watch over the important Atxarte pass. The slopes of Aitz Txiki are also home to some of the main rock climbing routes in Biscay.
