History of Almonacid
Almonacid de Toledo is famous for an important battle that happened here. This event took place in 1809 during the Napoleonic Wars. These wars were a series of big conflicts across Europe.
The Battle of Almonacid
In the battle of Almonacid, the French army fought against Spanish troops. The French forces were led by General Sebastiani. The Spanish troops were commanded by General Venegas. The French army won this battle. This victory was so important that it is even recorded on the famous Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France!
The Castle
The town of Almonacid de Toledo has a very old medieval castle. This castle is now in ruins, but visitors can still explore it. The walls of the castle stretch for about 220 meters all around.
Experts believe the castle might have been built around the 12th century. However, it probably replaced an even older castle. This earlier castle might have been built by the Visigothic people or during the Islamic period in Spain.
The castle sits on top of a hill. From this high spot, you can see other nearby forts. These include fortifications in the towns of Mora de Toledo and Orgaz.
