Almond is a small, unincorporated community in Swain County, North Carolina, United States. An unincorporated community is a place where people live that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town. Almond is located near the Little Tennessee River. It is about 7.9 miles (12.7 km) west-southwest of Bryson City.
A Look Back: Almond's History
Almond got its name from a man named Bud Almond. He gave the land where the community was built. The first post office in Almond opened a long time ago, on March 17, 1886. It even had its own special ZIP code, 28702.
Trains and Changes
For a while, Almond was an important stop for a train line called the Southern Railway. It had a train station, or "depot," where trains would pick up and drop off people and goods.
But things changed in 1943. A big project called the Fontana Dam was being built nearby. This dam created a large lake called Fontana Lake. Because of the lake, many parts of Almond, including its post office, school, and train depot, had to be moved. Today, much of the original Almond is now covered by the waters of Fontana Lake.
