Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Alois Kayser (born March 29, 1877, in Lupstein, Alsace; died October 21, 1944, in Chuuk) was a Roman Catholic missionary from Germany and France. He spent almost 40 years living and working on the island of Nauru. During his time there, he wrote a Nauruan grammar book and possibly a dictionary for the language.

In 1943, during World War II, the Japanese military deported him, along with another missionary named Pierre Clivaz and most of the Nauruan people, to Micronesia. Alois Kayser died there the next year.

To honor his important work, the government of Nauru named a technical school in the Ewa area after him. This school helps young people learn useful skills.
