Alphonse Louis Pierre Pyramus (or Pyrame) de Candolle (born October 28, 1806 – died April 4, 1893) was an important French-Swiss botanist. He was the son of another famous botanist, Augustin Pyramus de Candolle.

About Alphonse de Candolle

Alphonse de Candolle was the son of Augustin Pyramus de Candolle, a well-known botanist. Alphonse first studied law. However, he slowly became more interested in botany. Eventually, he took over his father's teaching position at the University of Geneva.

He wrote many books about plants. He also worked with his own son, Casimir de Candolle, to continue a big plant catalog called the Prodromus.

One of his most important achievements was creating the first rules for naming plants. These rules were called the Laws of Botanical Nomenclature. They were accepted at a big meeting of botanists in Paris in 1867. These rules were the first version of what we now use today, called the ICN.

Alphonse de Candolle received many honors for his work. He became a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1859. In 1889, he was given the Linnean Medal from the Linnean Society of London. He also became a foreign member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1878.

In 1855, de Candolle published a very important book called Géographie botanique raisonnée. This book was groundbreaking because it brought together a lot of information about plants from different expeditions. It helped explain why plants grow in certain places around the world. It also showed how plants are connected to their environment over long periods of time. This book greatly influenced other scientists, like the American botanist Asa Gray.
