Alquézar (in Aragonese, Alquezra) is a small town in the Province of Huesca in Spain. It is part of the Aragon region. In 2012, about 301 people lived there.
Exploring Alquézar
Alquézar is built on a large rock made of limestone. This rock formed a very long time ago. The town sits on the west side of a deep valley, or canyon, created by the Rio Vero river. This area is part of the beautiful Sierra y Cañones de Guara Natural Park.
The Historic Castle and Church
The town of Alquézar grew up around an old castle. This castle was very important. Its name, "Alquézar," comes from an Arabic word, al qaçr. This word means "fort" or "castle." The castle was a main defense point for the nearby city of Barbastro.
Inside the town, there is a special church called the church of Santa Maria. This church was officially opened and made sacred in the year 1099.
Nature and Ancient Art
The area around Alquézar is called Somontano. It is famous for its delicious wines. You can find many vineyards here.
There are more than 60 limestone caves in the area. These caves hold amazing prehistoric cave paintings. Because of these ancient artworks, UNESCO declared the region a World Heritage Site in 1998. This means it is a very important place for everyone to protect.
