Alston is a small town in Montgomery County, Georgia, in the United States. In 2020, about 178 people lived there.
History of Alston
The town of Alston got its name from Alex Alston, who was one of the first people to settle in the area. A post office opened in Alston in 1910. The town officially became a town (meaning it was "incorporated") in the same year, 1910.
Alston was also a place where important events related to voting rights happened in the past. In 1948, a significant event occurred that highlighted the challenges some people faced when trying to vote.
Geography of Alston
Alston is located in the southeastern part of Montgomery County. Its eastern edge touches the border of Toombs County.
Georgia State Route 135 is a main road that goes through the town. If you go north on this road, you'll reach Higgston in about 10 miles. Going southwest for about 3.5 miles will take you to Uvalda. Mount Vernon, which is the main town for Montgomery County, is about 10 miles northwest of Alston.
The United States Census Bureau says that Alston covers a total area of about 2.9 square miles (7.4 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a very small part (about 0.03 square miles or 0.07 square kilometers) being water.
