History of Higgston
When was Higgston Founded?
Higgston became an official town in 1903. The Georgia General Assembly, which is like the state's parliament, made it official.
Who was Higgston Named After?
The town got its name from a man named James Higgs. He owned several watermills in the area. Watermills used the power of flowing water to grind grain or saw wood.

Where is Higgston Located?
Higgston is in the northeastern part of Montgomery County. Its exact location is 32°13′2″N 82°28′2″W / 32.21722°N 82.46722°W.
Roads and Nearby Towns
U.S. Route 280 goes through the southern part of Higgston. If you travel west on this road for about 8 miles, you will reach Mount Vernon. This is the main town, or county seat, for Montgomery County. Traveling east on U.S. Route 280 for about 3 miles will take you to Vidalia.
State Routes 15 and 29 both pass through the center of Higgston. They are known as James Street in town. These routes lead northwest about 13 miles to Soperton. Another road, State Route 135, goes south from U.S. Route 280 for 13 miles to Uvalda.
Land and Water Features
Higgston covers a total area of about 3.2 square miles (8.3 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. Only a very small part, about 0.01 square miles (0.03 square kilometers), is water.
Rocky Creek flows through the eastern side of the town. This creek then travels southeast to join the Ohoopee River in Tattnall County.
