History of Alta Vista
Alta Vista was started as a town in 1887. It officially became a city in 1905. The name "Alta Vista" comes from Spanish and means "high view." The city was given this name because it is built on high ground.
In 1887, a railroad called the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway built tracks through Alta Vista. These tracks connected Topeka to Herington. Over the years, this railroad changed hands many times. Today, it is part of the Union Pacific Railroad system. Many local people still call it the "Rock Island" railroad. The first post office in Alta Vista opened in March 1887.

Alta Vista is served by the Union Pacific Railroad. This railroad line was originally built by the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railroad. It is an important route for trains traveling to places like El Paso, Texas.
