Altentreptow is a town in Germany. It is located in the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district. This area is part of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The town sits on the Tollense river. It is about 15 kilometers (9 miles) north of Neubrandenburg. Until 1939, the town was called Treptow an der Tollense.

History

The town of Altentreptow started as a Slavic village. This village grew around a strong fort. The fort was on a small hill. Today, the town's church stands on this same hill.

The name Treptow was first written down in 1175. This was when a monastery was built there. A monastery is a place where monks live and work. However, this monastery later moved to Verchen.

The town we know today was likely founded in the early 1200s. In 1245, it was called a "civitas." This is a Latin word meaning "city." In 1282, a document showed that the town followed "Lübeck law." This was a special set of rules for cities in that region.

In the Middle Ages, Altentreptow had three churches. Only one of these churches is still standing today. The town also had a hospital from that time. It was protected by two strong defensive walls. These walls were built before 1360.

Over the centuries, the town faced many fires and wars. In 1743, most of the town walls were taken down. But two old city gates from around 1450 are still here. These are the Brandenburger Torturm and the Deminner Torturm. Only the bottom part of the Deminner Torturm remains. It had some changes made in the 1800s.
