Alvarado is a city and port located in the Mexican state of Veracruz. Its full official name is Illustrious, Heroic, and Generous City and Port of Alvarado. The city is also the main town for the larger area, or municipality, that shares its name.
Alvarado is about 64 kilometers (40 miles) from the city of Veracruz, Veracruz. It sits at an elevation of 10 meters (33 feet) above sea level. The city is near the Gulf of Mexico to the east.
In 2000, about 22,608 people lived in Alvarado. The total area of Alvarado is around 840 square kilometers (324 square miles).

History of Alvarado
Alvarado has a long and interesting history, dating back to the 16th century.
Early Beginnings
The city was founded in 1518. A Spanish explorer named Pedro de Alvarado arrived in an area called Atlizintla that year. This is how the city got its name.
Becoming a Port
Later, in 1563, a man named Juan de Sahagún built a port here. This port helped supply the larger Port of Veracruz. Over time, the area became known as San Cristóbal de Alvarado.
Town and City Status
Alvarado officially became a town in 1816. Many years later, in 1878, it was given the status of a city.
