Amanullah Khan (born June 1, 1892 – died April 25, 1960) was a very important leader in Afghanistan. He was the ruler of Afghanistan from 1919 to 1929. At first, he was called an Emir, which is like a prince or governor. Later, after 1926, he became the King of Afghanistan.
Amanullah Khan is famous for helping Afghanistan become fully independent from the United Kingdom. He was also the first Afghan ruler to try and make the country more modern. His efforts to change things led to some people, like Habibullah Kalakani, fighting against him. Because of these conflicts, Amanullah Khan left Afghanistan on January 14, 1929. He first went to British India and then moved to Europe. He passed away in Zürich, Switzerland, in 1960.

Becoming a Leader
Amanullah Khan became the leader of Afghanistan in 1919. This was a time when Afghanistan was still heavily influenced by the British Empire. He quickly worked to gain full freedom for his country.
Making Afghanistan Modern
King Amanullah wanted to bring many new ideas and changes to Afghanistan. He believed in making the country more modern, similar to countries in Europe. He introduced new laws and tried to improve education and women's rights. These changes were quite big for Afghanistan at the time.
Challenges and Leaving Power
Not everyone agreed with Amanullah Khan's modern ideas. Some people in Afghanistan preferred older traditions. This led to a lot of disagreements and fighting. A leader named Habibullah Kalakani and his followers started a rebellion against King Amanullah. The fighting became very serious, and Afghanistan fell into a civil war. To avoid more conflict, Amanullah Khan decided to leave Afghanistan in 1929.
Life After Afghanistan
After leaving his country, Amanullah Khan lived in exile. He spent his later years in Europe, eventually settling in Switzerland. He died there in 1960. Even though his rule ended, he is remembered for his efforts to make Afghanistan independent and modern.
