Amalberga of Temse (born around 741, died July 10, 772) was an important woman from a powerful family called the Pippinids. They were part of the Frankish royal house, which ruled a large area in Europe. Amalberga is honored as a saint in both the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church. People especially remember her in places like Temse, Ghent, and Munsterbilzen in Flanders. She chose to live a religious life and was guided by Saint Willibrord.

Saint Amalberga's Story

Many amazing stories are told about Saint Amalberga. One famous story says she crossed the Scheldt river on the back of a giant fish. In old drawings and symbols, this fish is often shown as a sturgeon.

Her story is also connected to a powerful ruler named Charlemagne. Some writers say Charlemagne wanted to marry her. However, other stories suggest the ruler was Charles Martel, Charlemagne's grandfather.

Amalberga wished to dedicate her life to God. She refused to marry. The ruler tried to force her to come with him. He accidentally hurt her arm, but he could not make her go. After this, he became very ill. Amalberga forgave him and prayed for him to get better.

Her special day, or feast day, is usually celebrated on July 10.
