Early Life and Music Roots
Amanat Ali Khan was born in 1922 in Hoshiarpur. This area is now in Punjab, India. His father, Ustad Akhtar Hussain Khan, was also a talented singer. His father worked for the Maharaja of Patiala, a powerful ruler. Amanat Ali's grandfather, Ali Baksh Jarnail, helped start the Patiala vocal gharana of classical music.
Amanat Ali and his brother Fateh Ali learned music from their father. After India was divided in 1947, Amanat Ali and his family moved to Pakistan.
A Career in Music
Khan and his brother Fateh Ali started performing when Amanat was still a teenager. They sang at the court of the Maharaja of Patiala, Yadavindra Singh. Their first public concert was in 1945 in Lahore. A music supporter named Pandit Jeevanlal Matoo helped them.
In 1949, the brothers performed at a big music conference in Kolkata, India. This made them very famous in both India and Pakistan. After that, they traveled a lot in South Asia. They became well-known representatives of the Patiala gharana. Khan performed often on PTV and Radio Pakistan. He was one of the few singers in the 1960s and 1970s who was popular for both classical and ghazal singing.
Khan understood Urdu poetry very well. This helped him choose the best poems for his ghazals. He could also explain their meanings through his music. He was known for his skill with musical decorations. He also made his taans (fast musical patterns) more intense. One of their most famous thumris (a type of classical song) was "Kab Aaoge Tum Aaoge." Amanat Ali composed this song. It is still considered a classic. This song showed how the duo made classical music enjoyable for everyone.
The famous Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar learned Hindustani classical music from Amanat Ali Khan. This was for a short time before he moved to Pakistan in 1947.
Throughout his career, Khan sang many patriotic songs. Two famous ones are "Chand Meri Zameen Phool Mera Watan" and "Aye Watan Pyare Watan." He helped create simple songs that made people feel proud of their country.
His Unique Singing Style
Amanat Ali was said to have amazing talent and a "gifted voice." People said that while Fateh Ali was great with ragas (melodic frameworks), Amanat Ali was excellent with sur (notes). He was known for his strong and lively singing in high notes. Fateh Ali was better at singing lower notes. This made them a perfect match during their performances.
Khan was praised for making complex Hindustani classical ragas easier to understand. His voice was described as soft, beautiful, and smooth. Many people consider him the most important singer from the Patiala gharana.
Later Life and Legacy
Khan passed away at 52 years old in Lahore, Pakistan, on 18 September 1974. He died from a ruptured appendix. This was only a few months after his father, Akhtar Hussain, passed away.
One of his sons, Asad Amanat Ali Khan, also became a successful classical and ghazal singer. He died in 2007 in London, United Kingdom. Both father and son are buried in Mominpura Graveyard in Lahore. After his brother and singing partner Fateh Ali passed away, Fateh Ali was very sad. He stopped singing for several years. Later, he started performing again with his youngest brother Hamid Ali Khan and Amanat Ali's son, Asad Amanat Ali Khan.
