Amanda Solloway was born on June 6, 1961. She is a British politician. She was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Derby North. She served from 2015 to 2017 and again from 2019 to 2024. Amanda Solloway is part of the Conservative Party. She also held important government jobs. From September 2022 to July 2024, she was a Lord Commissioner of the Treasury. From February 2023 to July 2024, she was a minister helping with energy costs and skills.
Early Life and Career
Amanda Jane Edghill was born in Nottingham, England, on June 6, 1961. She grew up with a younger sister and brother. She went to Bramcote Hills Grammar School in Bramcote, Nottinghamshire.
At 16, Amanda started working in a shop. She then worked at Sainsbury's supermarket for 13 years. After that, she spent 15 years working in human resources. She worked for charities like Help the Aged and Save the Children. She also worked for a clothing company. In 2008, she started her own business. It was a company that helped other businesses with their management.
Becoming an MP
First Time in Parliament (2015-2017)
Amanda Solloway was first chosen as an MP in the 2015 United Kingdom general election. She won the election for the Derby North area. She won by a very small number of votes, just 41. She took the seat from the Labour MP Chris Williamson. He had been the MP since 2010.
As an MP, Amanda worked to improve things for people. She focused on helping with mental health issues. She also worked to help people experiencing homelessness in Derby North.
In the 2017 United Kingdom general election, Amanda lost her seat. Chris Williamson became the MP for Derby North again. Even after losing, she stayed active in Derby North. She helped the Conservative Party in local elections in 2018 and 2019.
Second Time in Parliament (2019-2024)
Amanda Solloway won back the Derby North seat in the 2019 United Kingdom general election. This time, she won with a much larger lead of 2,540 votes. Chris Williamson, who ran as an independent, finished in sixth place.
Helping Derby County FC
In September 2021, the local football club, Derby County FC, faced big problems. They were in danger of being removed from the English Football League. Amanda Solloway played a key role in helping to save the club. She helped create a group called "Team Derby." This group included other local MPs and the Derby City Council. She set up meetings with important people to find a solution. Amanda has said that helping to save the club was the most important thing she did as an MP for Derby North.
Working for Darley Abbey Bridge
From May to July 2022, Amanda worked for people in Darley Abbey. A bridge there had closed. She pushed for a temporary bridge to be put in place. When the Derby City Council agreed to buy a temporary bridge, Amanda then campaigned for a permanent one. She even brought government ministers to visit Darley Abbey to see the issue.
Bringing Great British Railways to Derby
Between July 2022 and March 2023, Amanda worked hard to bring the Great British Railways Headquarters to Derby. She asked people in her area to vote for Derby. She even wore a T-shirt with a QR code for voting. She also met with important government ministers to make her case. Her efforts helped Derby be chosen as the location.
Supporting Alstom Jobs
In October 2023, a train factory in Derby, Litchurch Lane (run by Alstom), announced it might close. This put over 1,000 jobs at risk. Amanda Solloway said helping with this was her main focus. She met regularly with the Secretary of State for Transport. In June 2024, a deal was made to order new trains. This deal helped save many jobs at the factory. The Secretary of State for Transport praised Amanda for her strong campaigning.
Government Roles
Ministerial Responsibilities (2020-2024)
Amanda Solloway held several important roles in the government.
- On February 14, 2020, she became a minister for science, research, and innovation. This was at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.
- On September 17, 2021, she became a lord commissioner of the Treasury. This role involves helping to manage government spending and acting as a Government whip.
- From July to September 2022, she was a minister for equalities and safeguarding.
- From February 2023 to July 2024, she was a minister at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. In this job, she helped with energy costs and green skills. She worked to stop people with prepayment meters from paying more for energy. She also helped manage government support for energy bills. This support helped people during high energy prices after the 2022 conflict in Ukraine.
Personal Life
Amanda Solloway lives in Derbyshire. She has supported the Friends Of The Baby Unit at Royal Derby Hospital. She ran the London Marathon in 2016 and 2017. She raised money for the hospital's baby unit through these runs.
She is also a Trustee at the Landau Forte Charitable Trust. This trust manages six school academies in the Midlands area.
