Amarildo Tavares da Silveira, known simply as Amarildo, is a famous retired Brazilian footballer. He was born on July 29, 1939. Amarildo played as a striker, scoring many goals throughout his career. He is especially remembered for his amazing performance at the 1962 FIFA World Cup, where he helped Brazil win the championship. He is the last player still alive who played in that exciting 1962 World Cup final match.

Playing for Clubs

Amarildo started his football journey in the youth teams of Goytacaz. People even called him the best player Goytacaz had ever produced! In 1958, he joined Flamengo. Later that year, he moved to Botafogo.

Success at Botafogo

At Botafogo, Amarildo became a star. He scored an impressive 136 goals in 201 games! His fantastic skills caught the eye of the Brazil national team manager. With Botafogo, he won several important titles, including the Campeonato Carioca in 1961 and 1962, and the Rio-São Paulo Tournament in 1962.

Moving to Italy

In 1963, Amarildo moved to Italy to play for Milan. In his first season, he scored 14 goals. He helped Milan win their first ever Coppa Italia in 1967, scoring the only goal in the final game. He played four seasons for Milan, scoring 32 league goals.

After Milan, Amarildo joined Fiorentina in 1967. He had another great success there, winning the Serie A league title in the 1968–69 season. He scored six goals that season, helping his team become champions.

Later, in 1970, Amarildo played for Roma. He scored ten league goals in 32 games for them. Towards the end of his playing career, he returned to Brazil. He played for Vasco da Gama and helped them win the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A in 1974.

Amarildo made his first appearance for the Brazil in April 1961.

The 1962 FIFA World Cup

The 1962 FIFA World Cup was a very important moment for Amarildo. Brazil's star player, Pelé, got injured during a group game. Amarildo was chosen to take his place.

In his first World Cup game, on June 6, 1962, Amarildo scored two goals against Spain. These goals were super important because they helped Brazil move on to the next stage of the tournament.

Amarildo kept his spot in the team for the quarter-finals and semi-finals. Then, he started in the final against Czechoslovakia. Czechoslovakia scored first, but Amarildo quickly equalized, making the score 1–1. Later in the game, he helped set up another goal, and Brazil went on to win the World Cup! Because of his amazing performance, a Brazilian journalist nicknamed him o possesso, which means "the possessed".

In total, Amarildo played 22 games for Brazil and scored seven goals.

Coaching Career

After he stopped playing, Amarildo became a coach. He coached the youth teams for Fiorentina in Italy and then for Botafogo in Brazil.

He also managed several senior clubs:

  • Espérance de Tunis (Tunisia) from 1984 to 1987
  • Rondinella (Italy) from 1987 to 1988
  • Turris (Italy) from 1988 to 1990
  • Pontedera (Italy) from 1991 to 1992

In 2008, he briefly managed America in Brazil.

Personal Life

In September 2011, Amarildo was diagnosed with throat cancer. However, he bravely fought the illness and announced he was cancer-free nine months later.
