The American Legion State Forest began in 1927. The first 213 acres were a gift to the state. This gift came from the American Legion, a group of military veterans. In the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps helped develop the forest. This group worked on many projects across the country. They built trails and other parts of the park.
