The American Licorice Company is a candy company from the United States. It started in Chicago, Illinois in 1914. Today, its main office is in La Porte, Indiana. They make candy in factories located in Union City, California and La Porte.
History of the Company
The company started making candy on the West Coast in San Francisco, California in 1925. That year, they even made special licorice shoes for Charlie Chaplin to eat in his movie, The Gold Rush!
Later, in 1971, their factory moved from San Francisco to Union City, California.
In 1999, American Licorice Co. teamed up with other candy companies like Ferrara Pan and Spangler. They formed a group called the Candy Alliance LLC. This group helped them work together to buy ingredients and share ideas.
In 2008, the TV show Unwrapped on The Food Network showed how Sour Punch straws are made. American Licorice Company also makes another candy brand called Sour Extinguishers.
In 2011, some workers at the company went on strike. They wanted to keep their health benefits.
On August 22, 2012, the company recalled some of its Red Vines Black Licorice Twists. This was because tiny traces of lead were found in them.
On June 28, 2023, it was announced that American Licorice would join with Theo Chocolate, a company based in Seattle.
