The American Licorice Company is a candy maker from the United States. It started in Chicago, Illinois in 1914. Today, its main office is in La Porte, Indiana. The company makes its candies in two places: Union City, California and La Porte.
A Sweet History of American Licorice
The company began making candy on the West Coast in San Francisco, California, in 1925. In the same year, they made special licorice shoes. These shoes were for Charlie Chaplin's character to eat in his famous movie, The Gold Rush.
In 1971, the candy factory in San Francisco moved to Union City, California.
In November 1999, American Licorice Co. joined with other candy companies. These included Ferrara Pan, Spangler, Goetze's, and NECCO. They formed a group called the Candy Alliance LLC. This group helps them work together. They can buy ingredients for less money. They also create marketing plans and share ideas for new candies.
In 2008, a TV show called Unwrapped on The Food Network showed how Sour Punch straws are made. The show had a four-minute part about it. Around that time, American Licorice Company also made a candy brand called Sour Extinguishers.
In 2011, some workers at the company stopped working for a short time. They did this to ask for better healthcare benefits.
On August 22, 2012, the company had to recall some candy. They recalled one-pound bags of Red Vines Black Licorice Twists. This was because tiny amounts of lead were found in them. This recall was done to keep everyone safe.
On June 28, 2023, it was announced that American Licorice would join with Theo Chocolate. Theo Chocolate is a company based in Seattle.
