About the American Oil Palm
This palm tree is known as the American oil palm because it grows in the Americas. Its scientific name is Elaeis oleifera. It is a close relative of the African oil palm, Elaeis guineensis.
Why is it important?
Even though the American oil palm is not usually grown to make palm oil for businesses, it is still very important. Scientists often mix it with the African oil palm to create hybrids.
These hybrid palms are special for two main reasons:
- They are more resistant to diseases. This means they can stay healthy even when other palms get sick.
- Their oil has more unsaturated fatty acids. This type of fat is often considered healthier.
So, while you might not see huge farms of American oil palms, its genes are very useful for making stronger and healthier oil palms around the world!
