Ames Creek is a small stream in the U.S. state of Oregon. It's like a tiny river that flows into a bigger one. This creek starts in the beautiful Cascade Range foothills. These are the lower parts of the mountains.
The creek begins near a place called Chimney Rock. This is in Linn County, Oregon. From there, Ames Creek flows towards the northwest. It travels until it reaches the South Santiam River. This meeting point is in the town of Sweet Home. The spot where Ames Creek joins the South Santiam River is about 33 miles (53 km) upstream from where the South Santiam meets the Santiam River. Just before it joins the river, Ames Creek flows under U.S. Route 20. This is a major highway.
A Special Bridge
Weddle Bridge
A very interesting bridge crosses Ames Creek in Sweet Home. It's called Weddle Bridge. This bridge is a special type known as a covered bridge. Covered bridges have roofs and walls. They look like long, wooden tunnels. They were built this way to protect the wooden parts from rain and snow. This helped them last much longer.
The Weddle Bridge wasn't always over Ames Creek. It used to be on Thomas Creek. That was in a different part of Linn County. But in 1989, the bridge was carefully taken apart. Then, it was rebuilt piece by piece over Ames Creek. You can find it in Sankey Park in Sweet Home. It's a cool place to visit and see a piece of history!
