Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Amos McLemore (born August 23, 1823 – died October 5, 1863) was a schoolteacher, Methodist preacher, merchant, and Confederate States Army soldier from Jones County, Mississippi. He was killed at the Deason Home.

Amos McLemore was born on August 23, 1823, likely in Simpson or Copiah County, Mississippi. He was the oldest son of John and Anna Maria McLemore. His family had lived in the Southern United States for nearly 200 years.

Life as a Soldier

Amos McLemore did not agree with the idea of Southern states leaving the United States. However, when it seemed clear that a war would happen, he decided to help. He volunteered to create a group of soldiers for the Confederate States Army.

His group was called Company B, 7th Battalion, 27th Mississippi Volunteer Infantry Regiment. They officially joined the Confederate army on September 10, 1861, in Ellisville. McLemore became their Captain. His company was also known as the Rosin Heels.

On March 16, 1863, McLemore was promoted to Major. This meant he was the third-highest commander in his Regiment. Even though he had not supported leaving the Union at first, he became an important leader for the Confederacy.

His Death

Major McLemore was sent back to Jones County from the Atlanta, Georgia, area. His mission was to find soldiers who had left their posts without permission and to recruit new people for the army.

On October 5, 1863, McLemore was staying at the home of State Representative Amos Deason, near Ellisville. It was a cold, rainy day. McLemore spent the afternoon talking with Deason and others in the house.

Later that evening, as he was getting ready for bed, McLemore was shot and killed. This happened to stop him from carrying out his orders to deal with the soldiers who had left the army.
