Amritsar Tahsil was a special area in British India, like a district or county. It was part of the Lahore Division in a region called British Punjab. Think of it as a smaller section within a larger province, managed by the British government.

What Was Amritsar Tahsil?

Amritsar Tahsil covered an area of about 545 square miles. This is roughly the size of a medium-sized city today. It was an important administrative area, meaning it helped manage local affairs for the British.

Where Was It Located?

The tahsil had clear borders. To its west was the famous city of Lahore, which sits by the Ravi River. To the east, it was separated from the State of Kapurthala by the Beas River. Kapurthala was one of the many princely states in India at the time, ruled by local kings under British supervision.

The land in Amritsar Tahsil was very fertile, meaning it was great for farming. This was thanks to a special water system called the Bari Doab Canal. This canal brought water from rivers to the fields, helping crops grow well.
