Amuelas is a neighborhood, called a barrio, located in the town of Juana Díaz, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 4,575 people lived there. It's a part of the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, which is a commonwealth of the United States.
Amuelas: A Look at Its History
Amuelas has an interesting history, especially how it became part of the United States. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This was part of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
Becoming a U.S. Territory
Once the treaty was signed, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it's a place controlled by the U.S. government but isn't a state.
Early Population Count
In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a special count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that Amuelas barrio had a population of 1,010 people at that time.
