Ana González González (born July 25, 1925 – died October 26, 2018) was a brave Chilean human rights activist. She was also known as Ana González de Recabarren. She spent much of her life fighting for justice and human rights in her country.

Who Was Ana González?

Ana González was born in Tocopilla, a city in Chile. She married Manuel Segundo Recabarren Rojas. They had two sons, Luis Emilio and Manuel Guillermo.

A Difficult Time in Chile

In 1976, during the military rule in Chile, a terrible event happened. Ana's two sons and her daughter-in-law, Nalvia Rosa Mena Alvarado, were taken away. Nalvia was pregnant at the time. They were never seen again. Only her two-year-old grandson, Luis Emilio, was returned. The very next day, Ana's husband, Manuel, went looking for them. He was also taken and disappeared.

Ana's Fight for Justice

After losing so much of her family, Ana González decided to act. She joined a group called the Association of Relatives of the Disappeared Detainees (AFDD). This group worked to find out what happened to people who disappeared.

Leading the Way

Ana became an important leader in the AFDD. She worked alongside other strong women like Sola Sierra and Viviana Díaz. She also worked with Clotario Blest. They all fought for human rights.

Speaking Up for Others

Ana took part in a hunger strike at the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean office in Santiago. This was a way to protest and draw attention to the disappeared. She also traveled to many places around the world. With Gabriela Bravo and Ulda Ortiz, she spoke to big organizations. These included the United Nations, the Organization of American States, and the International Red Cross. She also met with the Holy See (the Pope's office) and Amnesty International. She told them about the human rights problems in Chile.

Recognized for Her Courage

In 1996, a TV show called Quiero llorar a mares (I Want to Cry Rivers) was made about Ana. It was shown on Televisión Nacional de Chile. In 2001, she won an award called the Premios Ondas for her work.

Continuing the Search

Even after many years, Ana never stopped looking for her family. In 2000, she filed a formal complaint against Augusto Pinochet. He was the leader of the military government when her family disappeared. She wanted to know what happened to them.

Ana González de Recabarren passed away on October 26, 2018. She was 93 years old. She died without ever knowing where her family went. Her bravery and fight for justice continue to inspire many people.
