Anas's Football Journey
Starting Out in Football
Anas was born in Kondotty, Malappuram, Kerala. He started taking football seriously when he was in tenth grade. He joined the Malappuram Under-14 team. While playing football, Anas also worked as a driver to earn money.
He later joined the football team at N.S.S College, Manjeri. There, he improved his skills under the guidance of Dr. P.M. Sudhir Kumar. Anas was noticed by former Indian football star Feroz Sherif during a college game. Sherif suggested that Anas try out for Mumbai F.C., a club in the I-League 2nd Division. Anas passed the trials and signed a one-year contract with the club.
After his first season, Anas helped Mumbai FC get promoted to the I-League. He then signed a new three-year deal with the club. Anas has often said that his former coach, Dave Booth, helped him become the strong defender he is today.
Playing for Pune FC
After four seasons with Mumbai F.C., Anas joined their rivals, Pune F.C., on July 23, 2011. He signed a two-year contract with them. The head of operations at Pune FC, Chirag Tanna, said they had been watching Anas for two years and were happy he joined their team.
One of his first games for Pune was a friendly match against the English team Blackburn Rovers F.C. in October 2011. However, Anas was sent off (given a red card) after only 15 minutes for a rough tackle.
Before the 2012–13 season, Anas got malaria and missed some of Pune's pre-season training. But he recovered and returned to training in August 2012. That season became his best yet. He played in all 26 matches for Pune in the I-League. He helped the team's defense allow only 26 goals that season. Because of his great performance, Anas won the Pune Football Club Player of The Year award for 2012–13. He was the first Indian player and the first defender to win this important club award.
After his excellent two seasons, Pune FC offered Anas a two-year contract extension, which he accepted.
Becoming Team Captain
For the 2013–14 season, Anas was chosen as the captain of Pune FC. He led the team in their first league match of the season against Mohammedan in September 2013. Pune won the match 3–1. Anas played the entire game. After the match, he said he was very honored to wear the captain's armband for the first time. He thanked the new coach, Mike Snoei, for giving him the chance to lead the team.
Time with Delhi Dynamos
In 2015, Anas was chosen by Delhi Dynamos. In 2016, the club sent him to Central Coast Mariners, an Australian club, for a week of training and trials.
Joining Jamshedpur FC
On July 23, 2017, Anas was the very first player picked by Jamshedpur FC in the 2017–18 ISL Players Draft. This made him a historic player for the club. He played his first game for Jamshedpur on November 18, 2017, against NorthEast United. He started the match and played the whole game, which ended in a 0–0 draw.
Playing for Kerala Blasters
In 2018, Anas signed with Kerala Blasters, a club from his home state. He played alongside his national teammate Sandesh Jhingan as a strong defensive pair.
Moving to ATK
In 2019, Anas joined ATK. He wore the number 30 jersey for the team.
Playing for India
Anas made his first appearance for the senior Indian national team on March 22, 2017. It was a friendly match against Cambodia, which India won 3-2. He also represented India at the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, a major football tournament for Asian countries.
