Scientists officially described Ancistrus agostinhoi in 2009. The scientists who discovered and named it were A. G. Bifi, C. S. Pavanelli, and C. H. Zawadzki. They also described two other similar species of Ancistrus catfish at the same time. These were A. abilhoai and A. mullerae.
