André Tosel (born June 15, 1941 – died March 14, 2017) was an important French philosopher. He was known for his ideas about Marxism, which is a way of looking at society and economics. Tosel taught philosophy at several universities. He also held important leadership roles at the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis. He wrote many books about philosophy and thinkers like Karl Marx.

Early Life and Education

André Tosel was born in Nice, France, on June 15, 1941. He grew up in a Roman Catholic family. At university, he took on a leadership role in a Christian student group.

He studied at the famous École Normale Supérieure. There, he was guided by a well-known philosopher named Louis Althusser. In 1965, he earned a special teaching degree in Philosophy called the agrégation. He later received his PhD in Philosophy in 1982.

Academic Career and Ideas

Tosel taught Philosophy at the University of Franche-Comté and Pantheon-Sorbonne University. Later, he became a full professor at the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis. He was the vice president of this university from 1992 to 1998. He also led the Center for the History of Ideas from 1998 to 2003. He retired as a professor in 2012.

Tosel wrote many books about Marxism and other philosophers. He studied the ideas of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. He also wrote about thinkers like Baruch Spinoza, Antonio Gramsci, Hegel, Immanuel Kant, and György Lukács. He shared his ideas in important academic journals.

In his work, Tosel often criticized consumerism, which is when people focus too much on buying things. He believed that capitalism, an economic system, could lead to unfairness and poverty. He thought people should fight for freedom from this system. He supported workers' rights, feminism, and rejecting unfair control over other countries.

Another philosopher, Yvon Quiniou, said that Tosel was very important. He helped spread Marxist ideas in universities and among thinkers.

Personal Life and Legacy

André Tosel was married and had children. He was a member of the French Communist Party for many years. He first joined in 1972 and later rejoined in 2012.

Tosel passed away on March 14, 2017, in Nice.

After his death, many people shared their thoughts about him. Patrick Le Hyaric, a newspaper editor, said Tosel was "like a shining light." He felt Tosel helped people think clearly in a world where ideas can be hidden.

Pierre Laurent, who led the French Communist Party, was also very sad. He said Tosel deeply understood the challenges faced by groups trying to make society better. He added that Tosel was eager to share his ideas, not just with experts, but also with young people and workers.
