Andre Wade Dawkins, born on September 19, 1991, is an American who used to play professional basketball. He played college basketball for the Duke Blue Devils team.

Early Life and High School Basketball

Andre Dawkins was born in Fairfax, Virginia. He was raised by Andre and Pamela Dawkins. He started playing high school basketball at Deep Creek High School in Chesapeake, Virginia. Later, he moved to Atlantic Shores Christian School. There, he changed his school year to become a freshman again.

Andre was chosen three times for the first team all-state and all-conference teams. He was also on the all-state tournament team. When he was a sophomore, he was named the conference player of the year. During that time, he scored about 22.4 points and got 7.0 rebounds per game.

College Career at Duke University

Joining the Duke Blue Devils

In June 2008, Andre Dawkins decided to join Duke University in 2010. However, in July 2009, he announced a change. He decided to finish high school a year early. This allowed him to start at Duke University for the 2009–10 basketball season. This happened after another player, Elliot Williams, moved to play for Memphis.

Playing as a Freshman

Andre played in 38 games during the 2009–10 season. He played for about 12.6 minutes per game and scored 4.4 points on average. As a freshman, he was a backup guard for Duke's team. This team won the national championship in 2010.

In the NCAA tournament's Elite Eight game on March 28, 2010, against Baylor, Andre made two important three-pointers. These shots helped Duke stay in the game during the first half.

Taking a Break and Returning

In the summer of 2012, Duke announced that Andre would take a break from playing for the 2012–13 season. This is called a "redshirt" year. On April 11, 2013, Andre said he would return to Duke for his senior year. He also changed his jersey number from 20 to 34. This was a tribute to one of his favorite players, Ray Allen. Ray Allen also changed his number to 34 when he joined the Miami Heat.
