Andre Dawkins: A Basketball Journey
Andre Dawkins was born in Fairfax, Virginia. He was raised by Andre and Pamela Dawkins. He grew up loving basketball.
Growing Up and High School Hoops
Andre started his high school basketball journey at Deep Creek High School in Chesapeake, Virginia. Later, he moved to Atlantic Shores Christian School. There, he changed his school year to become a freshman again. This allowed him to play more high school basketball.
Andre was a top player in high school. He was chosen for the all-state team three times. He was also named the conference player of the year. This happened when he was a sophomore. In that year, he scored about 22.4 points per game. He also grabbed 7.0 rebounds per game.
College Days at Duke
In June 2008, Andre Dawkins decided to play for Duke University. He was supposed to join them in 2010. But in July 2009, he changed his plans. He decided to finish high school a year early. This let him join Duke for the 2009–10 season. This happened after another player, Elliot Williams, left the team.
A Challenging Freshman Year
In December 2009, Andre faced a very sad time. A family tragedy occurred. Despite this, he continued to play basketball. In his first year, the 2009–10 season, he played in 38 games. He averaged 12.6 minutes and 4.4 points per game.
As a freshman, Andre was a backup guard for Duke. His team won the national championship in 2010. In a big tournament game against Baylor, Andre made two important three-pointers. These shots helped Duke stay in the game.
Taking a Break and Returning Strong
In the summer of 2012, Duke announced that Andre would take a break. He would not play during the 2012–13 season. This is called a "redshirt" year. It allows a player to practice with the team but not play in games. This way, they can save a year of their college playing time.
On April 11, 2013, Andre announced his return to Duke. He came back for his senior year. He also changed his jersey number from 20 to 34. This was a tribute to Ray Allen, one of his favorite players. Ray Allen also changed his number to 34 later in his career.
Life as a Pro Basketball Player
After college, Andre Dawkins was not chosen in the 2014 NBA draft. However, he still got a chance to play professionally.
Starting with the Miami Heat
Andre joined the Miami Heat for the 2014 NBA Summer League. On September 23, 2014, he signed a contract with the Heat. He was later sent to the Sioux Falls Skyforce. This team is part of the NBA Development League, which is now called the G League. He was called back by the Heat in December. On January 6, 2015, the Heat decided to let him go. He had played in only four games for them. A few days later, he joined the Sioux Falls Skyforce again.
Andre also had a short time with the Boston Celtics. He signed a 10-day contract with them. He was often sent back and forth between the Celtics and their D-League team, the Maine Red Claws. He did not play in a game for the Celtics. After his second 10-day contract ended, he returned to the Sioux Falls Skyforce.
Playing in Italy and the G-League
