A Leader for Greece

Working with Eleftherios Venizelos

Andreas Michalakopoulos was a key member of the Liberal Party. He was a close friend and colleague of Eleftherios Venizelos. Venizelos was a very famous Greek statesman. Michalakopoulos worked with him for over 20 years.

Together, they helped negotiate important international agreements. These included the Treaty of Sèvres and the Treaty of Lausanne. These treaties helped shape Greece's borders and relationships after major wars. Michalakopoulos also signed the Greek-Turkish Friendship Convention in 1930. This agreement aimed to improve relations between Greece and Turkey.

Important Government Roles

Michalakopoulos held many important jobs in different Greek governments. He worked under leaders like Eleftherios Venizelos, Alexandros Zaimis, and Konstantinos Tsaldaris.

Some of his key roles included:

  • Foreign Minister (1928–1933): This job involved managing Greece's relationships with other countries.
  • Minister for Economy (1912–1916): Here, he managed the country's money and financial plans.

Standing Up for His Beliefs

In 1936, a military leader named Ioannis Metaxas took control of Greece. He started a dictatorship, which meant he ruled the country without much opposition. Andreas Michalakopoulos did not agree with this new government. Because of his strong beliefs, he was sent away from his home. This is called political exile. He was sent to the island of Paros. Sadly, he passed away in 1938 while in exile.

He was buried in the First Cemetery of Athens.
