Andregoto Galíndez facts for kids
Andregoto Galíndez was a queen of Pamplona (which is now part of Spain). She was married to García Sánchez I of Pamplona, who was the king. They later divorced before the year 940. Andregoto was the mother of Sancho II of Pamplona, who also became a king.
Andregoto was one of two daughters of Galindo II Aznárez, who was the Count of Aragon. Her mother was Sancha Garcés of Pamplona. Sancha was the half-sister of King Sancho I of Pamplona.
Andregoto's father's land, the County of Aragon, became part of the Kingdom of Pamplona during the time of King Sancho I. After her father died in 922, a count named Guntislo, who was her half-brother, took over Aragon.
Around the mid-930s, Andregoto married García Sánchez I of Pamplona. He was the only son of King Sancho I and was ruling Pamplona at the time.
Why Andregoto and García Divorced
Before the year 940, King García divorced Andregoto. The main reason for their divorce was likely because they were too closely related. Both Andregoto and García were grandchildren of García Jiménez of Pamplona. In those times, marrying someone too closely related was often not allowed.
Andregoto and García had one son together, Sancho II of Pamplona. He later became king. It is also thought that Andregoto might have been the mother of García's two daughters, Toda and Urraca, but this is not fully confirmed.
After the Divorce
Some historians believe that Andregoto might have married again and had more children after her divorce from King García. However, there are no clear records to confirm this.
A woman named Endregota, who lived in the 11th century, called Queen Andregoto her avuncula, which means 'maternal aunt'. This suggests that Endregota might have been a descendant of one of Queen Andregoto's sisters.
