Andres dela Rosa Narvasa (born November 30, 1928 – died October 31, 2013) was a very important judge in the Philippines. He served as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines. This is the highest judicial position in the country. He held this role from December 1, 1991, to November 30, 1998.
After his time as Chief Justice, he led a special group. This group looked into ways to improve the Philippine Constitution, which is the main set of laws for the country. He did this from 1999 to 2000.
Early Life and Education
Andres Narvasa was a bright student and also good at sports. He was the captain of his university's basketball team. At the same time, he was the top student in his law class at the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Civil Law.
He finished elementary school at Colegio de San Juan de Letran in 1938. He was the second-best student in his class. He then graduated from Arellano High School in 1945 as the top student.
Narvasa earned his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Santo Tomas in 1951. He graduated with high honors. He also received several honorary Doctor of Laws degrees later in his life. In 1951, he took the Philippine Bar Examinations and placed second overall. This showed how smart and dedicated he was to law.
Career Highlights
Narvasa started his career as a lawyer in 1952. He also became a law professor at the University of Santo Tomas. He eventually became the Dean of the Faculty of Civil Law there.
A major part of his career was when he became the main lawyer for the Agrava Fact-finding Commission. This group was formed to investigate a big event that happened in the country. Narvasa worked hard to gather evidence for this important investigation.
In 1986, President Corazon Aquino appointed him as an Associate Justice of the Philippine Supreme Court. He served in this role until 1991. Then, President Aquino appointed him again, this time as the Chief Justice.
As Chief Justice, Narvasa had the honor of leading the oath of office for two Philippine presidents. These were President Fidel V. Ramos and President Joseph Estrada.
After he retired in 1998, President Estrada asked him to lead a commission. This group was tasked with studying the country's basic laws and suggesting improvements. He worked on this from 1999 to 2000. In 2000, he also helped President Estrada in a legal process involving the president.
Family Life
Andres Narvasa was married to Janina Yuseco. They had six children together: Andres, Jr. (also known as Chito), Raymundo, Gregorio II, Socorro, Martin, and Regina.
His son, Andres, Jr., became a commissioner for the Philippine Basketball Association. Another son, Gregorio II, also worked as a commissioner for other basketball leagues. He now practices law. Andres Narvasa and his son Gregorio were partners in a law firm called Fortun Narvasa & Salazar Law Office.
Awards and Recognition
Andres Narvasa received many awards for his excellent work and service. Some of these include:
- Award of Distinction from the University of Santo Tomas in 1972.
- Award for Outstanding Achievements in Legal Education in 1981.
- Papal Award Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice in 1977.
- Human Rights Award in 1984.
- Knight Grand Cross of Rizal in 1992.
- Outstanding Manilan in 1993.
