Profession Lawyer

Francis Andrew Brewin (1907–1983) was an important Canadian lawyer and politician. He served as a Member of Parliament, helping to make laws for the country. His grandfather, Andrew George Blair, was also a politician. Andrew Brewin's son, John Brewin, later followed in his footsteps and also became a Member of Parliament.

A Life of Public Service

Andrew Brewin was born in Brighton, England, on September 3, 1907. He became a strong supporter of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) party. This party later became known as the New Democratic Party (NDP). He ran for election many times in the 1940s and 1950s.

Fighting for Justice

As a lawyer in the 1940s, Brewin took on a very important case. He worked to help thousands of Japanese Canadians. During the Second World War, many Japanese Canadians were treated unfairly. The government ordered them to leave their homes and even tried to send some out of Canada.

Brewin fought these orders in court. He took the case all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada. He also worked to help Japanese Canadians get their property back after the war. He convinced the government to start a special investigation, called a royal commission, to look into the issue.

Working in Ontario Politics

In 1945, Andrew Brewin also helped with a big investigation in Ontario. He worked with the leader of the Ontario CCF party. They were looking into whether the premier (the leader of the province) was using a secret police force.

Brewin was also the President of the Ontario CCF for a time. He even ran to become the leader of the party in 1953, but he did not win.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

Andrew Brewin first tried to become a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1945. He ran for the CCF party but was not elected.

However, he kept working hard. He was finally elected to the House of Commons of Canada in 1962. He represented the Toronto area of Greenwood. He served as an MP for many years, until he retired in 1979.

Ideas and Books

Andrew Brewin believed in something called "Christian socialism." This meant he thought that society should be fair and help everyone, based on ideas from his Christian faith. He wrote books and pamphlets about these ideas.

One of his books was called Stand on Guard: The Search for a Canadian Defence Policy. It was published in 1965. In this book, he wrote about Canada's military and its role in keeping peace around the world. He talked about Canada's part in United Nations peacekeeping missions.

His Family

Andrew Brewin had a son, John Brewin, who also became a Member of Parliament. He also had four daughters:

  • Margaret Wilbur
  • Martha Hynna, who worked for the Canadian Human Rights Commission.
  • Mary Lewis, who worked for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
  • Jane Morley, who worked to help children and youth in British Columbia.

Andrew Brewin passed away on September 21, 1983.
