Who Was Andrew P. Canova?
Andrew P. Canova was a person who lived in Florida during the 1800s. He was a veteran of an important conflict called the Third Seminole War. He also served in the American Civil War.
Life as a Florida Settler
In the fall of 1858, Andrew Canova moved from Tampa Bay to Brevard County. He decided to settle near the Sebastian River.
Living in a Palm Hut
Andrew Canova lived in a simple hut made from palm leaves near the river's mouth. He shared this home with a friend named Ed Marr. They spent their time hunting and fishing for food. They also tried to grow onions in a small garden.
Trying Out Citrus Farming
Canova also attempted to grow citrus fruits, like oranges. However, he quickly gave up on this project because he was not patient enough to wait for the trees to grow.
Andrew Canova's Military Service
In 1861, Andrew Canova traveled to St. Augustine. There, he joined the Confederate Army. This was during the time of the American Civil War.
