Andronikos Komnenos (Greek: Ἀνδρόνικος Κομνηνός), also known as Andronicus Comnenus, was a prince from the Byzantine Empire. He was part of the powerful Komnenian dynasty. He was born around 1108 and passed away in 1142.

Life of Andronikos Komnenos

Andronikos Komnenos was born around 1108 or 1109. He was the third child and second son of John II Komnenos, who was the Byzantine Emperor. His mother was Piroska, also known as Irene.

In 1122, his older brother Alexios became a co-emperor. At this time, Andronikos and his younger brothers, Isaac and Manuel, received a special title called sebastokrator. This was a very high rank, almost like a junior emperor.

Andronikos started his military career early. He joined his father in a big battle against the Hungarians in 1129. They won this battle. After that, he often went with his father on campaigns against the Seljuk Turks in Asia Minor. These were important military missions. Writers from that time praised Andronikos for his bravery and skill in battle.

Sadly, Andronikos died in August 1142. This happened shortly after his older brother Alexios also passed away. Both brothers were with their father on a campaign against the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia. Alexios suddenly got sick and died in a place called Attaleia. Andronikos then became the next in line to the throne. But he also fell ill and died soon after.

While their father continued his military campaign, their third brother, Isaac, brought the bodies of Alexios and Andronikos back to Constantinople. They were buried in a special church called the Pantokrator Monastery.

Andronikos's Family

Andronikos Komnenos married a woman named Irene around 1124. We don't know much about her family. Andronikos and Irene had several children:

  • Maria Komnene: She married Theodoros Dasiotes, and later John Kantakouzenos.
  • John Doukas Komnenos: He died around 1176. He married a woman named Taronitissa and had a daughter named Maria.
  • Theodora Komnene: She died in 1184. She married Henry II Jasomirgott, who was a Duke.
  • Eudokia Komnene: She married two times. Her second husband was Michael Gabras.
  • Alexios Komnenos: He married Maria Doukaina. They had a daughter named Eudokia and two sons who died young. He was an important leader for Alexios II.
