André de Montbard was a very important leader of the Knights Templar. He served as their fifth Grand Master. He was also one of the people who helped start this famous group of knights. He was born around 1097 and passed away in 1156.

Who Was André de Montbard?
André de Montbard came from an important noble family in Burgundy, a region in France. His family was well-known and respected.
He was also related to a very famous religious figure. André was the uncle of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux. Bernard was a key leader in the Christian church during that time. André's mother, Aleth de Montbard, was Bernard's half-sister.
Joining the Knights Templar
In 1129, André de Montbard decided to join the Knights Templar. This was a special group of warrior monks. Their main job was to protect Christian pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land. They also defended important places there.
André traveled to Palestine, where the Templars were based. He quickly showed his skills and leadership. He rose through the ranks to become a seneschal. This role meant he was the deputy, or second-in-command, to the Grand Master. He was a very trusted leader.
Becoming Grand Master
In 1153, a major event happened during the Siege of Ascalon. This was a battle for the city of Ascalon. The previous Grand Master, Bernard de Tremelay, was killed during an attack on the city.
After Bernard de Tremelay's death, André de Montbard was chosen to take his place. He became the fifth Grand Master of the Knights Templar. This happened on August 22, 1153. He led the order during a challenging time.
His Final Years
André de Montbard served as Grand Master for about three years. He continued to lead the Knights Templar with dedication.
He passed away on January 17, 1156, in Jerusalem. After his death, Bertrand de Blanchefort became the next Grand Master.
