Joining the NHL
The Boston Bruins picked Hilbert in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. He was the 37th player chosen overall. At the time, he was playing for the University of Michigan. He was a great player in college. In his second year, he was named an All-American. He was also chosen for the All-CCHA First Team.
In July 2001, Hilbert decided to become a professional player. He joined the Providence Bruins. This team is part of the American Hockey League (AHL). It is a league below the NHL. In his first year, he was named to the AHL All-Rookie Team. He also played in the AHL All-Star Classic.
Moving Between Teams
Hilbert missed the start of the 2003–04 season. This was because of a groin injury. He only played 19 AHL games that season. In February 2005, he was again named to the AHL All-Star Classic.
In November 2005, the Bruins traded Hilbert. He went to the Chicago Blackhawks. Later that same season, in March 2006, the Pittsburgh Penguins picked him up. This happened through a process called waivers.

On July 4, 2006, Hilbert signed a one-year contract. He joined the New York Islanders. In his first full season with the Islanders (2006-07), he had his best year. He scored 28 points. Because of his good play, the Islanders gave him a new two-year contract in July 2007.
Before the 2009-10 season, Hilbert signed with the Minnesota Wild. He played for them for one year. He then returned to the Islanders organization in August 2010. However, he had to retire from playing due to an injury.
