Starting in College and the AHL
Hilbert was chosen by the Boston Bruins in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. This means the Bruins picked him to join their team in the future. At the time, he was playing college hockey at the University of Michigan. He was a very good player in college, earning awards like being named an All-American.
In 2001, Hilbert decided to become a professional player. He started playing for the Providence Bruins, which is the main team for the Boston Bruins in the American Hockey League (AHL). The AHL is a league where players often develop their skills before joining the NHL. In his first year, he was named to the AHL All-Rookie Team.

Time with the Islanders and Wild
In 2006, Hilbert signed with the New York Islanders. This was a big step for him. He had his best season in the NHL with the Islanders in 2006-07. He scored 28 points, which includes goals and assists. Because he played so well, the Islanders signed him for two more years.
After his time with the Islanders, Hilbert signed a contract with the Minnesota Wild in 2009. He played a few games for them.
