Baseball Career Highlights
Starting with the Braves
Andy Marte began his baseball journey at a young age. He signed with the Atlanta Braves when he was just 16 years old in 2000. He quickly showed his talent as he moved up through the Braves' minor league teams, also known as their farm system.
He was so good that he was chosen to play in the All-Star Futures Game twice, in 2003 and 2004. This game features some of the best young players in baseball. In 2005, Andy played really well in Triple-A, which is just one step below the major leagues. He hit for a .275 average with 20 home runs. He also had 74 runs batted in (RBIs), which means he helped score 74 runs for his team. However, it was tough for him to get a regular spot with the Braves because another great player, Chipper Jones, played the same position.
Time with the Cleveland Indians
In December 2005, the Braves traded Andy Marte to the Boston Red Sox. Soon after, in January 2006, the Red Sox traded him to the Cleveland Indians. While playing for the Indians' Triple-A team, the Buffalo Bisons, in 2006, Andy was picked for the Triple-A All-Star Game. He even won the Home Run Derby, showing off his power!
Andy didn't get to play much with the Indians at first. But in 2008, he got more chances to play third base. He played in 80 games that year. In 2009, he played very well for the Columbus Clippers, another Triple-A team, hitting .327 with 18 home runs. He even made a rare appearance as a pitcher for the Indians in 2010, throwing a perfect inning!
Playing in Different Leagues
After his time with the Indians, Andy Marte continued his baseball career. He signed a minor league deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2010 and played for their Triple-A team.
In 2012, he didn't play baseball, but he came back in 2013. He played for an independent league team called the York Revolution. Later that year, he signed with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and played for their Triple-A team.
Return to Major League Baseball
In 2014, Andy Marte signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He started the season with their Triple-A team, the Reno Aces. On July 31, 2014, the Diamondbacks called him up to the major leagues. In his very first time at bat for the team, he hit a home run! This was a special moment for him.
Andy's last game in Major League Baseball was on August 6, 2014. Interestingly, on the same day he passed away in 2017, another baseball player named Yordano Ventura also died in a separate car accident.
Playing in South Korea
Andy Marte spent the 2015 and 2016 baseball seasons playing in South Korea. He played for the KT Wiz team in the KBO League.
