Aneby is a small town in Sweden. It's the main town, or "seat," of Aneby Municipality in Jönköping County. About half of the municipality's 6,500 people live right here in Aneby. The town is located in the south Swedish highlands, about 45 kilometers from Jönköping. You can find it along highway route 34, which goes from Tranås in the north to Eksjö in the south.

History of Aneby

Even though Aneby changed a lot in the 1900s, people have lived in this area since the Stone Age. A very important event happened before the 20th century. A railway line was built in 1874, connecting Aneby to Nässjö. This train line is still used today!

The railway helped Aneby grow by making it easier to communicate and travel. At that time, most of the land belonged to Johan Axel Schreiber, who owned a large farm called Aneby gård.

Things changed when Anders Petter Andersson arrived in 1906. He bought the farm from Schreiber. Andersson then started selling parts of the land to people who wanted to build homes. He also helped create new roads. This made the community grow very quickly.

Between 1906 and 1920, 120 new apartments were built. The town kept growing! Every year until the 1950s, at least one new business opened. These included a butcher shop, a car repair shop, and even a brewery.

In 1966, Aneby Municipality was officially created. This happened when the smaller municipalities of Bredaryd and Hullaryd joined together. A few years later, in 1978, a study predicted that Aneby Municipality would have 6,975 people by 1990.

However, the municipality grew even more than expected! By 1990, it had 7,159 people. This was the highest population for the municipality. By 2015, the number of people living in Aneby Municipality was 6,521.

Geography of Aneby

Aneby's landscape is made up of high, flat areas called plateaus. These plateaus are cut through by valleys. The land here is usually between 200 and 300 meters above sea level.

The Svartån river flows from south to north through Aneby. Between Aneby Lake and Lake Ralången, the river forms a 19-meter-high waterfall called Stalpet.

Most of the soil in Aneby is moraine soil, which was left behind by glaciers. You can also find sediments from ancient glacial lakes. About 70% of Aneby is covered by forests, mostly pine and spruce trees. Where there are deciduous forests (trees that lose their leaves) and pastures, the landscape looks brighter.

Farms in Aneby are often built on the higher parts of the land, like hilltops or slopes. This is because there's less risk of frost higher up. The fields are usually closest to the farm, with pastures and forests further down the slope.

Population in Aneby

The number of people living in Aneby Municipality has been quite steady since the mid-1980s. About 60% of the people live in urban areas, and 52% live in the main town of Aneby itself.

Work and Businesses

Aneby is known for its agriculture and forestry. About 7% of the people who work in the municipality have jobs in farming or forestry.

Aneby's good location for transport and its access to wood and workers have helped industries grow. About 33% of the workers are in industrial jobs, mostly in the main town. The timber industry used to be very important, but it has become less so. Now, the economy is more varied, with many small and medium-sized businesses.

Some of the larger companies in Aneby include:

  • Attends Healthcare AB: They make medical supplies.
  • Hags AB: They create park and playground equipment.
  • Anebyhus AB: They build houses.
  • Fläkt Woods AB: They make ventilation systems.

About one-third of the people who work in Aneby are employed in the public sector, meaning they work for the government or public services.
