Aneta is a city in Nelson County, North Dakota, United States. It is a small community that was first settled in 1882. By 1893, Aneta officially became a city. In 2020, the census counted 234 people living there.

A Look Back: Aneta's History

Aneta started as a settlement in 1882. It was named after Anna Rosetta Mitchell, who was the first woman to settle in the area. Because the Sheyenne River flows nearby, people sometimes called the town "The Queen City of the Upper Sheyenne."

Growing with the Railroad

In 1896, the Great Northern Railway built a train line to Aneta. This helped the city grow very quickly, turning it into a "boomtown." A boomtown is a place that grows fast because of new business or opportunities. Aneta's Post Office opened in 1883, and the railroad station was built in 1896.

Becoming a City

Aneta officially became a city in 1893. At that time, North Dakota required a town to have 500 people to become a city. Aneta had 512 residents. Later, in 1903, it was again incorporated as a city.

City Services for Residents

Over the years, Aneta added many important services for its residents:

  • A school opened in 1897.
  • Telephone service arrived in 1899.
  • Electric lights were installed in 1912.
  • A community building, called a civic auditorium, was built in 1927.
  • Running water became available in 1955.
  • A sewer system was put in place in 1960.
  • Streets were paved in 1965.
