Angel Joy Chavis Rocker was an American politician and school counselor from Florida. In 1999, she made history. She became the first black woman to run for President of the United States as a member of the Republican Party.
Early Life and Education
Angel Joy Chavis Rocker grew up in High Point, North Carolina. She finished high school at T. Wingate Andrews High School. She then went to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Later, she earned a master's degree in counseling from Georgia State University.
Political Career and Goals
Rocker worked as a school counselor and lived in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. On March 23, 1999, she announced her plans. She would form a special group to explore running for president. She hoped to become the Republican candidate in the 2000 United States Presidential election.
With this announcement, she became the first black woman to seek the presidency as a Republican. Many people saw Rocker's campaign as a long shot. She had little money for her campaign. She was not widely known, and she had no past political experience. She had never held an elected office before.
Her ideas included creating a flat tax. This means everyone pays the same percentage of their income in taxes. She also wanted to improve medical care for more people. Another goal was to encourage more black people to join and have a voice in the Republican Party.
She wanted to see if the Republican Party was a "big tent". This phrase means a party that welcomes many different kinds of people and ideas. At a Republican meeting in Alabama in 1999, she explained her reasons. She said she wanted to "talk about issues that bring in Hispanics, African Americans, and other minorities" to the Republican Party. She believed it was important to discuss these topics in a positive way. Her campaign was all about including more people in the party.
George W. Bush later won the Republican primary in 2000. He then won the main election against Al Gore.
Rocker passed away on February 25, 2003. She was 36 years old. She died in Navarre Beach, Florida, after a surgery.
