Dame Angela Rosemary Emily Strank, born in October 1952, is a talented British engineer. She is known for her important work at BP, a major energy company. At BP, she was the head of "downstream technology" and the chief scientist. This means she was in charge of all the science and technology used in making fuels, lubricants, and other products from oil and gas.

Becoming a Scientist

Angela Strank studied at the University of Manchester. In 1975, she earned a degree in geology, which is the study of Earth's rocks and history. She continued her studies and received a PhD in micropalaeontology in 1981. This field involves studying tiny fossils, like those of small sea creatures called foraminifera. Her research looked at these tiny fossils to understand different time periods in British geology.

Her Work Journey

In 1980, Angela Strank started working at the British Geological Survey. She has said that she became a geologist "by accident," but it turned out to be a great path for her.

Just two years later, in 1982, she joined BP as a geologist. She moved up through different roles at the company. In 2013, she also joined the board of governors at the University of Manchester, helping to guide her old university. In April 2014, she was given the important role of chief scientist at BP. She also served as a director at Severn Trent Water, a company that provides water services.

Awards and Recognition

Angela Strank has received many awards for her achievements. In 2010, she won the UK First Women's Award in Science and Technology. This award celebrates pioneering women in business and industry across the UK.

In 2017, she was made a Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (DBE) by the Queen. This is a very high honor in the UK. In the same year, she became a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng). In 2018, she was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS), which is a huge honor for scientists who have made major contributions to knowledge. She also received an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Royal Holloway, University of London in 2018.
