Angelina Romanovna Melnikova (born July 18, 2000) is a talented Russian artistic gymnast. She has won many medals at the Olympics and World Championships. This makes her one of the most successful Russian gymnasts ever!

At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Angelina helped the Russian team win a gold medal. She also won a silver medal with the team at the 2016 Rio Olympics. She has been part of gold-winning teams at the European Championships in 2016 and 2018.

Angelina has also won many individual medals. She earned two Olympic medals, five World medals, and nine European Championship medals. She was the 2021 World Champion in the all-around competition. She also won bronze medals in the all-around and floor exercise at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Since 2017, Angelina Melnikova has been the captain of the Russian women's national gymnastics team.

About Angelina Melnikova

Angelina Melnikova was born on July 18, 2000, in Voronezh, Russia. She has a younger brother named Oleg. Angelina started gymnastics when she was six years old. Her grandmother took her to her first practice.

When she was thirteen, she moved to Moscow to train at the Round Lake national training center. This is a special place where top gymnasts train. She also studied sport and tourism in college.

Junior Career Highlights

2014: European Junior Champion

In 2014, Angelina competed at the International Gymnix event in Canada. Her team won the gold medal. She also won a silver medal in the all-around competition. At the Russian Championships, she won gold in the all-around, balance beam, and floor exercise.

Later that year, Angelina competed at the European Championships. She helped her junior team win gold. She also won gold medals in the all-around and on the balance beam. She earned a silver medal on the uneven bars.

2015: Strong Junior Performances

Angelina continued to do well in 2015. At the Junior Russian Championships, her team placed first. She also finished second in the all-around and won gold on the balance beam.

She competed at the Elite Gym Massilia meet in France, where her team won silver. Angelina also won the all-around title at this event. At the Voronin Cup, she won gold medals on vault and floor exercise.

Senior Career Highlights

2016: First Olympics

In 2016, Angelina became old enough to compete as a senior gymnast. She won her first senior national all-around title. She also helped the Russian team win gold at the European Championships.

Angelina was chosen to represent Russia at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. She helped her team win a silver medal. Even though she had a hamstring injury, she performed well in the team final.

2017: European Floor Champion

Angelina became the captain of the Russian women's national team in 2017. She won the all-around title at the Russian Cup.

At the European Championships, Angelina won a gold medal on the floor exercise. She performed a clean and strong routine. She also competed at the World Championships later that year.

2018: World Team Silver & Elegance Award

Angelina started 2018 by winning the Birmingham World Cup. She also won gold with the Russian team at the City of Jesolo Trophy. At the Russian Championships, she won her second all-around gold medal. She also won gold on uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise.

At the European Championships, her team won a gold medal. Angelina also won silver on vault and bronze on uneven bars. At the World Championships, she helped Russia win the team silver medal. She also finished fifth in the all-around. Angelina received the Longines Prize for Elegance for her beautiful style.

2019: European Games Champion

In 2019, Angelina won silver in the all-around at the Russian Championships. At the European Championships, she won bronze in the all-around. She also won silver on uneven bars and bronze on floor exercise.

Angelina competed at the European Games and won gold in the all-around. She also won gold on uneven bars and two silver medals on vault and balance beam. She was featured in an Olympic Channel documentary called All Around.

2020: Pandemic Challenges

The year 2020 was difficult for sports due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many competitions were canceled. Angelina did compete at the Friendship & Solidarity Meet. She had the highest all-around score at this event.

2021: Olympic Gold and World All-Around Champion

Angelina had an amazing year in 2021. At the European Championships, she won gold on uneven bars and silver in the all-around and floor exercise.

At the Tokyo Olympics, Angelina helped the Russian Olympic Committee team win the gold medal. This was a historic win for Russia in women's team gymnastics. She also won a bronze medal in the individual all-around, her first individual Olympic medal. She then won another bronze medal on floor exercise.

After the Olympics, Angelina competed at the World Championships. She won the gold medal in the all-around competition, becoming the World Champion! She also won silver on floor exercise and bronze on vault.

2022–2024: Continued Success in Russia

Due to international rules, Angelina could not compete in international events for a while. However, she continued to compete and win medals in Russia.

In 2022, she won gold in the all-around at the Russian Cup. She also won gold on floor exercise at the Spartakiade. In 2023, she won silver in the all-around at the Russian Championships.

In 2024, Angelina won gold in the all-around at the Russian Championships again. She also won gold medals on vault, balance beam, and floor exercise. She competed at the 2024 BRICS Games and won gold on uneven bars and silver on vault.

Awards and Recognition

Angelina has received several important awards for her achievements:

  • After the 2016 Olympics, she received the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" and the title of Honoured Master of Sport.
  • In 2018, she was given the Longines Prize for Elegance at the World Championships.
  • After the 2020 Olympics, she received the Order of Friendship.
