Angelos Basinas (born on January 3, 1976) is a Greek former professional footballer. He played as a defensive midfielder, which means he helped protect his team's goal. He could also play as a central midfielder or a centre back.
Basinas is best known for his very important role in the Greek national team. This team surprisingly won the 2004 European Championship. In the final match against Portugal, he provided the corner kick that led to the winning goal scored by Angelos Charisteas.

Playing for Clubs
Angelos Basinas played for several football clubs during his career. He started in Greece, then moved to Spain, back to Greece, then to England, and finally to France.
Panathinaikos: His First Club
Basinas began his football journey with the Greek team Panathinaikos. He spent over ten years there, from 1995 to 2005. During his time at Panathinaikos, he helped the team win both the Greek league and the Greek Cup in 2004. He played over 150 games for the club and scored many important goals. He left the club in 2005 after a disagreement.
Mallorca: Playing in Spain
In 2006, Basinas decided to move to Spain. He signed a contract with Mallorca, a team in the Spanish Primera División. In his first half-season, he was a key player in helping Mallorca avoid being moved down to a lower league. In his second year, he helped the team finish in seventh place. He played 81 games for Mallorca before his contract ended in 2008.
AEK Athens: A Short Return to Greece
On July 31, 2008, Basinas signed a three-year contract with AEK Athens, another Greek club. However, the team did not perform as well as expected during the first part of the season. Because of this, Basinas decided to look for a new team during the winter transfer period.
Portsmouth: Time in England
In February 2009, Basinas joined Portsmouth, an English club. He made his first appearance for Portsmouth on February 7, 2009. Soon after he joined, the manager who brought him to the club was replaced. Basinas didn't play much at first, but he still wanted to stay with the team. Later, fans showed that they appreciated his creative playing style. With Portsmouth, Basinas reached the final of the FA Cup in 2010, but he was not in the squad for that match.
Arles-Avignon: Final Club
In the summer of 2010, Basinas moved to Arles-Avignon in France, joining his former teammate Angelos Charisteas. He played five games for the club in the French league and cup. His contract ended just two months later.
Playing for Greece
Angelos Basinas was a very important player for the Greek national team. He played 100 games for his country, which is a huge achievement!
Early International Career
Basinas played his first game for Greece on August 18, 1999. He even scored his first goal just two days later in his second match. He became a regular player for the national team after Otto Rehhagel became the coach in 2001.
Euro 2004 Victory
Basinas was a key player when Greece surprisingly won the Euro 2004 championship. In the very first game of the tournament, Greece played against the host team, Portugal. Basinas scored a penalty goal, helping Greece win that game 2-1. He was a vital part of the Greek team's strong midfield throughout the entire tournament. In the final match, it was Basinas's corner kick that led to Angelos Charisteas scoring the winning goal against Portugal, making Greece champions!
Becoming Captain
After Theodoros Zagorakis, another famous Greek player, retired, Basinas was chosen to be the captain of the national team. On April 1, 2009, Basinas played his 100th game for Greece. At that time, he was only the second Greek player ever to reach 100 games for the national team.
