Angelos Basinas (born January 3, 1976) is a famous Greek former football player. He mostly played as a defensive midfielder, which means he helped protect his team's goal. He could also play as a central midfielder or a centre back. He is best known for being a key player in the Greek national team that surprisingly won the 2004 European Championship. He even helped score the winning goal in the final game against Portugal!

Club Career Highlights
Angelos Basinas played for several football clubs during his career. He started in Greece and later played in Spain, England, and France.
Playing for Panathinaikos
Basinas began his professional career with the Greek team Panathinaikos. He played there for over ten years, from 1995 to 2005. During his time with Panathinaikos, he helped the team win both the Greek league and the Greek Cup in 2004. He played in over 150 games for the club.
Time in Spain with Mallorca
In 2005, Basinas decided to leave Greece and join the Spanish team Mallorca. He played in Spain for about two and a half years. In his first season, he helped Mallorca avoid being moved down to a lower league. In his second year, the team finished seventh in the league. He played 81 games for Mallorca.
Short Stays in Athens and Portsmouth
After Mallorca, Basinas returned to Greece to play for AEK Athens in 2008. He signed a three-year contract. However, he only played 14 games before moving to England.
In February 2009, Basinas joined Portsmouth in England. He made his debut shortly after joining. Even though his first manager was replaced quickly, Basinas stayed with the club. He reached the 2010 FA Cup Final with Portsmouth in 2010.
Final Club: Arles-Avignon
In 2010, Basinas moved to France to play for Arles-Avignon. He played five games for the team. His contract ended a couple of months later.
International Career with Greece
Angelos Basinas was a very important player for the Greek national team. He played his first game for Greece in 1999. He scored his first goal just two days later!
Euro 2004 Victory
Basinas was a key player in Greece's amazing win at UEFA Euro 2004. This was a huge surprise in the football world. He scored a penalty goal in Greece's first game against the host country, Portugal. Greece won that game 2-1.
In the final match, also against Portugal, Basinas took a corner kick. His teammate, Angelos Charisteas, scored the winning goal from that corner. This made Greece the champions of Europe!
Captain and 100 Caps
After the team's captain, Theodoros Zagorakis, retired, Basinas was chosen to be the new captain. On April 1, 2009, Basinas played his 100th game for Greece. He was only the second Greek player ever to reach 100 international appearances.
