Angora is a neighborhood in the southwest part of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It's a cool place with its own history and special spots. Even though its exact borders aren't super clear, it's surrounded by other neighborhoods like West Philadelphia to the north and Kingsessing to the south.

Angora is easy to get to! The Angora Commuter Rail Station is right there. Plus, two bus lines (routes 46 and "G") and a trolley line (SEPTA Route 34) all meet up near Baltimore Avenue and 58th Street. This area is like the unofficial center of the neighborhood.

In 2005, a part of Angora was marked as needing improvement. But don't worry, other parts, like Angora Terrace, are very well-kept and nice.

History of Angora

How Angora Got Started

Angora was founded in 1863 by two brothers, Robert and George Callaghan. They named it after the city of Ankara in Turkey. For many years, the area didn't have many people living there. It was mostly open land with lots of trees. It felt like a quiet countryside, even though it was part of a big city.

Early Growth and Industry

Between 1900 and 1920, Angora really started to grow. When it was first founded, the Callaghan brothers had a textile mill here. A textile mill is a factory that makes cloth. Later, in the early 1900s, another mill was built to make yarn. A factory that made glass also opened.

With these industries, more homes were built for people to live in. Most of these homes were on the 5800 block of Baltimore Avenue. Some were also built in an area that used to be a group of trees, called Sherwood Forest.

Fun Times at Kingsessing Park

A popular spot for people in Angora, especially kids and older residents, was Kingsessing Park. This park is in the nearby Kingsessing neighborhood. In 1918, a recreation center was built there. It gave people a fun place to play and hang out.

The Sherwood Cricket Club

Angora was also home to the Sherwood Cricket Club. Cricket was a very important sport back then. The Belmont Cricket Club in West Philadelphia was one of the most famous places for cricket in the whole country! You can find many mentions of the Sherwood Cricket Club of Angora online. There's even a cool painting of it on the PhillyH2O website.
