Anisancylus dutrae is a tiny, air-breathing snail that lives in freshwater. It's a type of limpet, which means it has a shell shaped like a small cap. This snail is part of the Planorbidae family, also known as ram's horn snails.

What's in a Name?

This snail was named after Dr. Ana Virginea C. Dutra. She is a scientist from the Federal University of Pernambuco in Brazil. The snail was first described in 1994.

Where Does It Live?

A. dutrae is special because it only lives in Brazil. You can find it in the northeastern states of Pernambuco and Bahia.

Its Home Base

The first place this snail was officially found and described is called its "type locality." For A. dutrae, this is the Tapacurá Ecological Station. This station is located in São Lourenço da Mata, Pernambuco.

What Does It Look Like?

A. dutrae has a shell that is quite tall for a limpet. Its shell opening is oval-shaped. The shell can grow up to about 5 millimeters (which is about 0.2 inches) long.

Shell Details

The very top part of the shell, called the apex, sticks out. It's not pointy, but rather flat on top. This apex bends towards the right and back of the shell.

The shell's surface has some interesting patterns. You can see clear lines that go outwards, like spokes on a wheel. There are also wavy, fine lines that go in circles around the shell.

Body and Color

The snail's body, especially the part called the mantle, is usually dark brown or black. However, the areas where its muscles attach (like for its foot and tentacles) are not colored.

Where It Lives

A. dutrae likes to live in places where water moves quickly. You can find these snails attached to the top of stones. They prefer small, fast-flowing streams.
