The Anita Shapolsky Gallery is an art gallery that opened in 1982. It was started by Anita Shapolsky and is located in New York City. You can find it on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

This gallery is special because it focuses on a type of art called abstract expressionism from the 1950s and 1960s. This art style is often called the New York School. The gallery shows many kinds of abstract art, including expressionism, geometric abstraction, and painterly styles.

Most of the artworks you'll see are paintings made with oil or acrylic. There are also sculptures. The gallery often features artists who followed the first abstract expressionists. It also shows works by younger artists, older Latin American artists, women artists, and African-American artists.

History of the Gallery

Anita Shapolsky was born in New York City. She studied art at Hunter College and New York University. Her love for art grew during her studies. She later married Martin Shapolsky and had two children.

Anita started collecting ancient art first. In the 1970s, she began collecting contemporary art, especially abstract expressionism. This led her to open her own gallery.

The gallery first opened in 1982 in SoHo, a neighborhood in Manhattan. It was on the second floor of 99 Spring Street. Back then, it was known as the Arbitrage Gallery. It showed American abstract art from the 1950s.

In 1984, the gallery moved to a different space at the same address, 99 Spring Street. In this new space, they started showing art by Latin American artists and women artists. Later, in 1997, the gallery moved again. It found a new home in a brownstone building at 152 East 65th Street. This new location is in the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

Anita Shapolsky Art Foundation

In 1998, Anita Shapolsky started a special non-profit group called the Anita Shapolsky Art Foundation. This foundation is located in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania. It's about a two-hour drive from New York City.

The foundation is in a large, old Presbyterian church building from 1859. It's about 10,000 square feet! During the summer, the foundation offers educational programs for children. It also displays abstract art and modern artworks.
