Writing Career
Ann Crispin started her writing career in 1983. She was known for writing "tie-in" novels. These books expand on the stories and characters from movies or TV shows. She was very good at making these characters feel real. She explored their backgrounds and feelings.
Famous Star Trek and Star Wars Books
Crispin wrote several popular Star Trek novels. Two of them, Yesterday's Son and Time for Yesterday, continued a Star Trek TV episode. They told the story of Spock's son. Yesterday's Son was the first Star Trek novel not based directly on a movie to become a New York Times Best Seller. Later, she wrote Sarek, which was about Spock's father.
Her most famous Star Wars books are The Han Solo Trilogy. These three books tell the story of Han Solo's life before the first Star Wars movie, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.
Other Movie and TV Books
Ann Crispin also wrote books based on other popular stories. She wrote the novelization for the V TV miniseries. She also wrote the book for the movie Alien Resurrection. Another book she wrote was Sylvester, a film about a girl and her horse.
Pirates of the Caribbean Adventures
Disney asked Ann Crispin to write a book about Captain Jack Sparrow. He is a main character from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Disney chose her after reading her Han Solo Trilogy.
Crispin spent three years writing Pirates of the Caribbean: The Price of Freedom. She did a lot of research on pirates and ships. She even got to read the script for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End early. Her instructions were to stick to history, unless it went against the movie stories. She loved writing the scene where Jack Sparrow first saw his ship, the Wicked Wench. The book was published on May 17, 2011.
Her Own Series: StarBridge
Besides writing books for big franchises, Ann Crispin also created her own series. It was called StarBridge. These novels were mainly for young readers.
Helping Other Writers
Ann Crispin was also a leader in the writing community. She helped run the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. With another writer, Victoria Strauss, she started a group called Writer Beware. This group helps new writers avoid scams from fake agents or publishers. Writer Beware started in 1998. It has helped police stop many writing scams.
In 2013, Ann Crispin was honored as the Grandmaster by the International Association of Media Tie-In Writers. This award recognized her amazing work in writing books based on movies and TV shows.
