Ann Lee Doran (born July 28, 1911 – died September 19, 2000) was an American actress. She was known for playing many different types of characters in movies and TV shows. One of her most famous roles was Carol Stark, the mother of Jim Stark (played by James Dean) in the movie Rebel Without a Cause (1955). Ann Doran was also an early member of the Screen Actors Guild, which is a group that helps actors. She also served on the board of the Motion Picture & Television Fund for 30 years.
Early Life
Ann Doran was born in Amarillo, Texas. Her mother, Rose Allen, was also an actress in silent films. Ann went to high school in San Bernardino, California.
Movies and Films

Ann Doran started acting when she was very young, at just four years old. She appeared in over 500 movies! She usually played smaller parts, like a "stand-in" (someone who takes the place of the main actor for lighting and camera tests) or a "bit player" (someone with a very small role).
By 1938, she signed a special agreement with Columbia Pictures. This meant she would work for them a lot. She appeared in many of their films, including adventure series called "serials" like The Spider's Web. She also appeared in short films and "B features," which were shorter, less expensive movies.
Ann Doran was a favorite of director Frank Capra. She was in many of his movies, often in supporting roles. For example, in Meet John Doe (1941), she played a wife, and her lines were very important, even though she wasn't listed in the credits. She also had some main roles, like in Rio Grande (1938).
Later, she became known for playing steady and sensible mothers. This led to her famous role as James Dean's mother in the movie Rebel Without a Cause in 1955.
Television Shows
Ann Doran also appeared in more than 1,000 episodes of different TV shows! She played Charlotte McHenry, the housekeeper, on the show Shirley. She was also Agnes Haskell, Eddie Haskell's mother, on Leave It to Beaver.
She was a guest star on many other TV programs. She appeared three times on Public Defender. In 1952, she was in an episode of The Lone Ranger. She also appeared in the children's Western series My Friend Flicka.
Ann Doran guest-starred on Perry Mason three times. She was also in Rawhide and Colt .45. In 1960, she played Martha Brown, the mother of Velvet Brown, in the family drama National Velvet. She even appeared on McHale's Navy and The Virginian.
Later, she played Zerelda James Samuel, the mother of famous outlaws Jesse and Frank James, in The Legend of Jesse James. She also appeared on the popular show M*A*S*H as Nurse Meg Cratty.
Later Years and Death
Ann Doran passed away on September 19, 2000, when she was 89 years old. She died in Carmichael, California. After her death, she left a large gift of $400,000 to the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital. This is a retirement home for people who worked in the movie industry.
